Elon Musk's Tesla entered the Indian EV space a few months back, but is witnessing slow momentum. The brand entered our shores with high expectations, but the numbers have remained short of expectations. The low customer interest in the market has made the US-based EV giant hire local leadership, claims a Bloomberg report. It further reveals that Tesla Inc has hired Sharad Agarwal to spearhead the brand as its new India Head.
In the past, Sharad Agarwal has led Lamborghini India for more than a decade, and he indeed helped the brand with strong sales in the Indian market. In fact, India is now one of the top 15 countries for the Italian supercar maker in terms of sales. Before joining Tesla Inc, Sharad had also held the role of Chief Business Officer at Classic Legends.

With this move, it is quite clear that Tesla Inc. is serious about its Indian operations. While Tesla has had a tough time entering India, dealing with high import tariffs, it is now dealing with a drop in adoption rate for electric cars. Prior to Sharad Agarwal, Isabel Fan, Southeast Asia Director, Tesla, was handling activities for the brand.
In the Indian market, the company currently sells the Model Y SUV with prices starting from Rs 59.89 lakh, ex-showroom. The Tesla Model Y's rear-wheel drive version offers the choice of both a 60 kWh and a larger 75 kWh battery pack in India. The RWD variant is equipped with a single electric motor that generates approximately 295 hp. Furthermore, the 60 kWh battery claims to provide a WLTP range of 500 km on a single charge, while the long-range version asserts a range of 622 km.
