Private players to foray into medical education?

India is acutely short of doctors and private players investing in medical education is seen as one possible solution. The 11th planning commission recommended it and today the Health Secretary came out and supported it. Private companies have been allowed to set up nursing schools, but only state or central governments, and not for profit trusts or societies are allowed to set up medical colleges. While the final decision will rest with the HRD ministry, corporate India is raring to go.
