"Why Can't America Do What India Does?" Trump's India Election Remark

At a time when sections of India's Opposition are alleging that elections are being "stolen", voter lists cannot be trusted and the Election Commission is suspect, US President Donald Trump is pointing to India's election system as something America could learn from. Trump highlighted India's 646 million voters, its photo-ID system and the limited use of postal ballots, while invoking Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Trump has not certified India's elections as perfect or addressed Rahul Gandhi's allegations. Yet his remarks raise a larger question: can India have an electoral system impressive enough for the US President to publicly emulate while still facing serious questions at home? Or has "dead democracy" become a political conclusion invoked when election results don't go the Opposition's way?
