US President Donald Trump has signalled that the war with Iran is nearing completion, claiming Tehran's military capabilities have been largely destroyed. However, Princeton University professor Bernard Haykel suggests Trump may actually be looking for an "off-ramp," largely due to soaring oil prices that have crossed $120 per barrel and the potential economic fallout. Haykel argues that despite damage to some assets, Iran retains significant capabilities, including missile and drone strikes, and is unlikely to back down quickly as it seeks to impose costs on the US and its allies. The conflict, he says, has turned into a strategic game of brinkmanship between Washington, Tehran and Israel.
