An alarming report by HelpAge India says that one in four old people face some kind of abuse - verbal, physical, neglect. The biggest perpetrators of this abuse are sons (62%) followed by daughter-in-laws (44%) and in most cases abuse is for property and money. While old people are aware of redressal mechanisms they don't use them due to fear of retaliation or fear of dishonour to the family.
