Senior Congress MP Karti Chidambaram speaks to NDTV, strongly criticising the government’s directive linked to the Sanchar app. Calling it “Orwellian” and an invasion of privacy, he says the tool gives the state blanket access to citizens’ phones, comparing it to installing Pegasus on every device. He argues that democracies cannot function with such intrusive surveillance and questions why the government needs access to private chats, photos and personal data. When asked about the Telecom Minister’s defence that the Sanchar app helped block anti-India WhatsApp accounts and detect fraud, Karti challenges supporters to publicly share their own data if they believe such access is acceptable. On the SIR issue, he says transparency and open debate are essential. He urges the government to address the opposition’s concerns, adding that “sunshine is the best disinfectant.”
