A young, unarmed army officer has been tortured and killed in Kashmir. Lt Ummer Fayaz, just weeks away from turning 23, was found dead in Shopian around 30 km from his village where he had gone to attend a wedding. The Lieutenant of the Rajputana Rifles had joined the army just five months ago. His family, too terrified to report his kidnapping, had hoped that he would be sent back alive. Hundreds turned up this morning as the festivities turned tragic for the family. His instructors remember him as a 'dynamic and smart go-getter'.
