With the government planning to bring in a tougher poll law to prevent the entry of candidates with criminal records, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could feel the heat. Two of its top leaders including L K Advani are amongst 20 MPs who stand to be debarred from contesting elections due to charges having been framed against them, which the government defines as serious offences. Currently, only convicted persons are barred from contesting elections.
