Senior BJP leaders LK Advani, Union Minister Uma Bharti and Murli Manohar Joshi were charged with criminal conspiracy by a court in Lucknow today in the 1992 Babri mosque demolition case. They had argued against the framing of charges against them, asserting that they had no role in the mosque razing and had tried to stop it, but their discharge petition was rejected. The special CBI court, asked to wrap up the case within two years, will begin trial of these leaders but they do not have to attend the daily hearings. Mr Advani, 89, made his second court appearance in the case in 25 years.
