Japan is headed to the national polls this Sunday after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi decided to hold snap-elections despite the fact that the country was not due to face elections till 2028. Takaichi, who assumed office in October as the country's first female leader, decided to hold early elections hoping to secure a decisive victory for her Liberal Democratic Party to push through an ambitious conservative political agenda. Takachi remains hugely popular, although her party has been riddled with recent scandals.
