There's a raging debate in Tamil Nadu on whether some of the greatest Carnatic vocalists in the state are insulting Hindusim by singing Islamic and Christian hymns in a Carnatic style. So strong is the outrage, particularly on social media, that some Carnatic singers have been forced to apologise or withdraw from concerts. The allegations are two fold - one that a Hindu singer should not sing in praise of gods of other religions and second that Carnatic music was being appropriated by other religions. In all this, the leading vocalist TM Krishna, who joins us on this programme, says not only will he defy these threats, he will also sing a Christian or Islamic hymn every month.
