Giorgia Meloni Says Italy Willing To Protect Shipping Lanes In Strait Of Hormuz

Giorgia Meloni has welcomed the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and signalled Italy’s readiness to help secure one of the world’s most critical oil routes. Speaking after a virtual summit with European leaders, she said Rome is prepared to deploy naval units, subject to parliamentary approval, to ensure freedom of navigation. The discussions centred around an international maritime security initiative aimed at stabilising the region after recent tensions disrupted global trade. With nearly a fifth of the world’s oil passing through the strait, the conflict had triggered sharp spikes in petroleum prices, prompting coordinated efforts to safeguard shipping lanes and restore confidence in global markets.
