Falling Bridges: Where Is The Accountability?

In less than a month, India has witnessed two deadly bridge tragedies - one in Vadodara, the other in Pune- raising urgent questions about our crumbling infrastructure and the systemic negligence that enables it. According to government data, 42 bridges collapsed in India between 2019 and 2024. And if you extend that window to include under-construction structures, the number is even more chilling - 21 operational bridges and six still under construction collapsed since 2012. Who builds these bridges? Who inspects them? Who signs off on their safety? And who is punished when they fall? Is it just time and weather that erode concrete and steel - or is it corruption, incompetence, and neglect that are really eating away at our public infrastructure?
