Wholesale Inflation Dips

Wholesale inflation in the country declined to 2.04 per cent in July, according to government data released today.

Wholesale inflation was at a six-month low in September but at the same time remained at double-digit levels for the sixth straight month

Retail or CPI inflation dipped to a 14-month low of 4.20 per cent in October, while the one based on wholesale prices or WPI fell for a second consecutive month, to 3.39 per cent in October.

Deflationary trend continued for the sixth month in a row with inflation dropping to a new low of (-)2.65 per cent in April, mainly on account of decline in prices of fuel and manufactured items even as food prices increased.

With inflation dipping to -2.06 per cent in February, India Inc on Monday said the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) must continue slashing policy rates to revive demand in the economy. This is the fourth month in a row that wholesale inflation stayed in negative zone.

The ease in wholesale price index based inflation in June is "temporary" and is likely to accelerate going ahead due to poor rainfall and higher vegetable prices, India Ratings and Research has said.

Consumer prices in India dipped marginally to 9.86 per cent on an annual basis in July 2012.

Consumer prices in India fell to 10.02 per cent on an annual basis in June, and lower than the 10.36 per cent recorded in May, government data released Wednesday showed. On Monday, headline inflation, which is measured by the Wholesale Price Index, came in at 7.25 per cent, lower than estimates of 7.62 per cent and the May figure of 7.55 per cent.
