Leading contenders for Car and Bike Awards 2012

Global auto major Mahindra and Mahindra's latest offering XUV500 has been been nominated for the SUV of 2011 in the car and bike show telecasted by NDTV Profit. XUV500 sports a mHawk VGT engine with 140 Bhp@3750 Rpm maximum power. It has displacement of 2179 cc. Priced attractively, this global SUV (sports utility vehicle) is likely to set a new benchmark for competition. The base model, called the W6, has a price tag of Rs 10.8 lakh while the W8 variant has been priced at Rs 11.95 lakh.

  • Not long ago, cars were designed keeping a western rich man in mind. Today, global car companies are designing cars and bikes that could appeal to India's common man. They are willing to experiment with designs that suit Indian conditions and then take those concepts overseas.

    Each year, ‘NDTV Car and Bike Awards' recognizes those auto companies winning hearts and minds of Indians. The NDTV Car & Bike Awards 2012 awards will be held on 16 December 2011 in Mumbai.

    Here is a list of contenders for this year's awards:
  • Global auto major Mahindra and Mahindra's latest offering XUV500 has been nominated for the sports utility vehicle (SUV) of the year by the Car and Bike Show aired on NDTV Profit. XUV500 sports a mHawk VGT engine with 140 Bhp@3750 rpm maximum power. It has displacement of 2179 cc.

    Priced attractively, this global SUV is likely to set a new benchmark for competition. The base model, called the W6, has a price tag of Rs 10.8 lakh while the W8 variant has been priced at Rs 11.95 lakh.
  • French automaker Renault's sedan Fluence has also been nominated by NDTV. The petrol version comes with a powerful engine that promises a mileage of 13.4 km. It has displacement of 1997 cc and maximum power of 101 bhp @ 4000 rpm.
  • Volkswagen's Jetta is also in the race to win the award. It is one the best selling European cars in US over the last decade. Jetta has a ground clearance of 139 mm. It has a displacement of 1968 cc.

    It has a common rail TDI engine that boasts of 137 bhp @ 4200 rpm power. It has peak torque of 320 NM @ 1750-2500 rpm.
  • Honda's latest offering Brio is competing in the category of compact cars. It has a top speed of 120 km per hour. The car has a 1.2 litre i-V tec engine that delivers maximum power of 87 bhp @ 600 rpm.

    Brio comes with a displacement of 1198 cc and peak torque of 109 NM @ 4600 rpm. The car promises a mileage of 18.4 kmpl.
  • Chevrolet's Beat (diesel) will be competing with Brio in the compact cars category. The car sports a 1.0 SDE Smartech diesel engine that delivers 57.3 bhp @ 4000 rpm. It boasts of highest torque per litre in its class and comes with peak torque of 150 NM @ 1750 rpm. It has a 5 speed (manual) transmission.
  • Japanese carmaker Toyota's Etios Liva also features in the race for compact cars. Its diesel version has a displacement of 1364 cc. The car has 66.64 bhp @ 3800 rpm power and peak torque of 170 NM @ 1800 rpm- 2400 rpm.
  • Hyundai's latest offering Eon, which is seen as a tough competition to Maruti Suzuki's Alto is also in the award race.

    Eon promises a mileage of 21.4 kms per litre. It comes with a displacement of 814 CC. The car has 55 Bhp @ 5500 Rpm maximum power.
  • Ford Fiesta's petrol version has been nominated in the compact sedans category. The car sports a Ti-VCT engine and has a displacement of 1499 cc. It delivers 108 bhp @ 6045 rpm and a peak torque of 140 NM @ 1400 rpm.

    Its diesel version has a TDCi engine and displacement of 1498 CC. The car delivers 89 bhp @ 3750 rpm and has a peak torque of 204 NM @ 2000-2750 rpm.
  • Hyundai's Verna (petrol) is also in the race for best compact sedan of the year. Verna has a 1.6 VTVT engine and displacement of 1582 CC.

    The car has maximum power of 121 bhp @ 6300 rpm and peak torque of 155 NM @ 4200 Rpm. Its diesel version has 1.6 CRDi VGT engine and displacement of 1582 cc.
  • Skoda's latest offering Rapid (petrol) has a 1.6 litre engine that offers a displacement of 1598 cc and maximum power of 105 bhp @ 5250 rpm. Its diesel version comes with maximum power of 105 bhp @ 4400 rpm and displacement of 1598 cc. It sports a peak torque of 250 NM @ 1500-2500 rpm.
  • Japanese carmaker Nissan's new launch Sunny has managed to grab eyeballs and enter the prestigious NDTV awards race. Sunny comes with a 1.5 litre HR 15 engine with displacement of 1498 cc.
  • Bajaj's Boxer (150 cc) is a contender for the best bike of the year.

    The company claims Boxer to be an SUV on two wheels, which is priced lesser than some other 100 cc bikes in the markets. The bike has a single cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled engine. It has a displacement of 144.8 cc and maximum power of 12 bhp @ 7500 rpm.
  • Yamaha R15 has also been nominated in the car and bike show. The company is aiming to revive its India market share with the launch of its new version 2.0.

    The bike has displacement of 149.8 CC and maximum power of 17 Bhp @ 8500 Rpm. It has peak torque of 15 Nm @ 7500 Rpm and 6 speed (manual) transmission.
  • Impulse, which is Hero's latest offering after its parting from Honda is also in the race. It is the first dirt bike from the Hero stable. The bike boasts of technology from Honda. It has a displacement of 150 cc.

    The bike sports an air cooled, 4- stroke single cylinder OHC and self-start engine. It has maximum power of 13.8 bhp @ 8000 rpm and peak torque of 13.6 NM @ 6000 rpm.
  • Honda's latest offering CBR 250R also features in the race. The bike sports a four-stroke, DOHC 4-valve, water cooled engine and has a displacement of 249.4 cc. It has maximum power of 26.2 bhp @ 8500 rpm and peak torque of 22.9 NM @ 7000 rpm. The bike has a six-speed gear box.
