Shelley Fabares, the beloved actress known for her roles in The Donna Reed Show and Coach, has died at the age of 82. The actress had a career spanning several decades, becoming a familiar face on American television and also appearing in numerous films.
She died on Saturday in Los Angeles, her family confirmed in a statement to The Associated Press. They did not disclose the cause of her death.
"To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for. We will remember Shelley for her kindness, loyalty, wit, courage, and beautiful spirit. We will miss her deeply - not only as a celebrated performer, but as the loving and extraordinary person she was in our everyday lives," the statement read.

Shelley Fabares stepped into the world of acting at a very young age after being born in Santa Monica, California, in 1944. By the time she was 10, she had already landed her first television role on The Loretta Young Show. The actress went on to build an impressive list of early credits across both the small and big screens.
Her film work included Our Town alongside Paul Newman, Frank Sinatra and Eva Marie Saint. She later featured in Rosalind Russell's The Girl Rush and the Rock Hudson-starrer Never Say Goodbye. On television, her early appearances included Annette, Captain Midnight and The Twilight Zone, where she featured in the episode Black Leather Jackets.
Shelley's career took a major turn when she landed the role of Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show. She remained part of the regular cast from 1958 to 1963. Her success on television also opened doors in Hollywood. In the early 1960s, Fabares appeared alongside Elvis Presley in three films - Girl Happy, Spinout and Clambake.
In the late 1970s, she joined the CBS sitcom One Day at a Time as Francine Webster and also portrayed James Caan's wife in the television film Brian's Song. She later landed one of her most recognisable roles as Christine Armstrong on the sitcom Coach.
Shelley Fabares was married twice. Her first marriage was to record producer Lou Adler, which ended in 1966. She got married to MASH actor Mike Farrell in 1984. The couple remained together for over 41 years until her passing in August 2026.
