Tesla has updated its 'Full Self-Driving (Supervised) autonomous driving to add a new mode. Called the "Mad Max" mode, this the highest setting in terms of aggressive driving which permits the driver to for higher speed even if it means breaking speed limited or swift lane changes. Earlier, the highest setting was Hurry mode which is now second. The whole list of modes include, Mad Max, Hurry, Standard, Chill, and Sloth.
This isn't the first time Tesla has introduced this mode, which takes its name from a well-known post-apocalyptic film series featuring aggressive driving. The Mad Max mode was first launched during the early days of Tesla Autopilot, the forerunner to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD), back in 2018. At that time, CEO Elon Musk described the feature as more assertive in making lane changes and handling difficult traffic conditions, specifically mentioning Los Angeles.
Currently, this new mode is accessible to Early Access testers. In its existing version, Mad Max mode enables much more determined driving when maneuvering through traffic, along with faster acceleration. According to initial user feedback on forums and social media, the maximum speed now reaches up to 85mph (roughly 137km/h).
Numerous Tesla enthusiasts who have received the update appear to appreciate the enhanced speed and power, reporting significantly reduced frustration in everyday driving scenarios. This development is also viewed as a considerable advancement in Tesla's aspirations for autonomous driving, indicating greater confidence in its decision-making and diminished dependence on human drivers. The mode has been described as "like a sports car."
This new feature will not be available in India, as Tesla has not yet introduced its Full Self Driving capability there, despite it currently being available for purchase and potentially included with a Model Y order in anticipation of a future rollout.
