Toyota's popular SUV, the Fortuner, is gearing up for a major generational change. The first test mules of the upcoming model have been spotted in Thailand, heavily camouflaged, confirming that development for the 2026 Fortuner is already underway. This comes shortly after Toyota revealed the ninth-generation Hilux in late 2025, signaling that the company is accelerating updates across its ladder-frame portfolio.
Next-Gen Toyota Fortuner: Powertrain Expected
The upcoming Toyota Fortuner is set to continue with familiar engine choices while introducing new technology. Expected options include the 2.7-litre petrol and 2.8-litre diesel engines, along with a 48-volt mild-hybrid diesel system that was recently introduced in India. Globally, Toyota is preparing to add an all-electric version of the SUV, and a fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV) could also be part of the lineup in select markets. For India, the focus will remain on petrol and diesel units with mild-hybrid assistance. Transmission choices are likely to include a six-speed manual and a torque-converter automatic gearbox, paired with both petrol and diesel engines.

Next-Gen Toyota Fortuner: Exterior & Design Expected
Spy shots of the test mule, seen under heavy camouflage in Thailand, reveal little detail but suggest design inspiration from the latest Hilux. The new Fortuner is expected to feature a more upright stance, a larger grille, sharper headlamps, and a flatter bonnet. At the rear, changes could include a squared-off profile, redesigned bumper, and sleeker taillights. The SUV is likely to retain its rugged appeal but with a more modern and refined look.

Next-Gen Toyota Fortuner: Interior & Features Expected
Inside, the Fortuner is expected to undergo one of its biggest upgrades yet. Borrowing cues from the new Hilux, the cabin could feature a 12.3-inch fully digital driver display and a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen. Toyota Safety Sense is expected to be updated with enhanced driver assistance systems, while electric power steering will improve manoeuvrability. Over-the-air (OTA) software updates will help keep the SUV's systems current throughout its lifecycle.
Premium materials, improved connectivity, and advanced ADAS functions are likely to be part of the package. The current Fortuner, despite being a strong seller, has often been criticised for lacking modern technology and driver assistance features. The next-generation model aims to address these gaps, offering a more feature-rich and premium cabin experience.
