India's passenger vehicle market closed March 2026 on a strong note, and despite the continuing SUV wave, it was the Maruti Dzire that emerged as the country's best-selling car for the month. The compact sedan led the top 10 chart with 21,224 units, proving there is still strong demand for practical and efficient compact cars.
Close behind was the Tata Punch, including its EV version, with 20,977 units, followed by the Tata Nexon at 19,810 units. Both Tata SUVs continued their strong run in the market, remaining among the most preferred choices for buyers looking at compact urban SUVs.
Tata Punch
The Hyundai Creta secured the fourth spot with 17,838 units, staying firmly among India's most in-demand midsize SUVs. Maruti Suzuki continued its strong presence in the rankings with the Ertiga at 17,072 units, while the ever-popular WagonR followed very closely at 17,025 units.
Further strengthening Maruti's hold on the top 10 list was the Baleno (7th best-selling car in March 2026), which posted 16,392 units in March 2026. The Brezza, another key SUV from the brand, recorded 16,130 units, while the sporty Fronx continued its momentum with 15,540 units.
Hyundai Creta
Rounding off the list was the Mahindra Scorpio range, including the Scorpio N, with 14,578 units, highlighting the sustained demand for rugged lifestyle SUVs.
The overall top 10 chart clearly reflects the market's current balance between traditional passenger cars and utility vehicles. While SUVs continue to dominate buyer interest across segments, the Dzire's return to the top spot shows that compact sedans still have a strong and loyal customer base.

Another notable takeaway from the March 2026 list is Maruti Suzuki's wide presence across body styles. From the Dzire and WagonR to the Baleno, Brezza and Fronx, the brand continues to maintain strong traction in multiple high-volume segments.
Combined sales of the top 10 cars stood at 1,76,586 units in March 2026, underlining healthy demand momentum as the financial year came to a close. While SUVs continue to shape the broader market trend, March belonged to the Dzire, which successfully outpaced several of India's most popular SUVs to reclaim the No.1 position.
