Mahindra recently launched the XEV 9S in India, priced from Rs 19.95 lakh (ex-showroom). Built on the company's INGLO platform, it is positioned as the country's electric seven-seater SUV. While the model has been praised for its design and features, feedback on the adaptive suspension prompted Mahindra to introduce a new Custom drive mode, giving drivers more control over how the SUV behaves.

The newly added Custom mode allows owners to fine-tune the SUV's character by adjusting individual systems such as suspension, steering, and the powertrain. Instead of being locked into preset configurations, drivers can now mix and match attributes from different modes. For instance, the suspension can be stiffened for better stability, while steering can remain relaxed for everyday comfort.

Earlier reviews highlighted that the adaptive suspension, available only on higher trims, felt too soft, leading to constant vertical movement on uneven roads. While Race mode solved this issue with firmer damping, it also altered throttle response and regenerative braking, making it unsuitable for daily use. The Custom mode bridges this gap by letting drivers enjoy firmer suspension without compromising efficiency or comfort.

Mahindra has confirmed that all newly manufactured XEV 9S units equipped with adaptive dampers will include the Custom mode as standard. Currently, this feature is exclusive to Pack Three trims, which already offer adaptive suspension. Lower trims, Pack One and Pack Two, continue with passive dampers and do not get this level of adjustability.

The Custom option joins the existing Default, Everyday, Range, and Race modes. Together, they provide flexibility for different driving conditions, whether it's maximizing efficiency, enjoying spirited performance, or balancing comfort with control.

For customers who already own the Pack Three variant, Mahindra may roll out the Custom mode through an over-the-air software update or via dealership support. This ensures that early adopters are not left behind and can benefit from the improvements.
