LeafyBus, Eicher Partner To Roll Out 100 Electric Intercity Sleeper Buses

LeafyBus, a long-distance electric bus operator, has entered into a strategic partnership with Eicher Trucks & Buses to deploy 100 Skyline Pro E 13.5-metre electric intercity sleeper coaches across major national routes. The initiative marks a significant step toward expanding clean mobility options and reducing diesel dependency in India's long-haul passenger transport sector.

The rollout will begin with 35 buses scheduled for commissioning by March 31, 2026, under an electric bus leasing programme facilitated by Enetra EV Private Limited. The partnership will initially focus on high-demand routes, including Delhi-Dehradun and Delhi-Lucknow, with additional corridors planned over the next 18 months as part of LeafyBus's nationwide expansion strategy.

Through this collaboration, Volvo Group is formally entering India's intercity electric bus market via its joint venture with Eicher Motors under VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd. (VECV). Teams from LeafyBus and Eicher are working together on route planning, charging network design, vehicle uptime solutions, and operational support to ensure reliable intercity electric travel connectivity.

The Skyline Pro E 13.5-metre electric sleeper bus features a 36+D configuration with upper and lower berths. It is powered by a 400 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack paired with a 235 kW permanent magnet motor. The model also includes features such as front and rear air suspension, advanced braking systems, and energy-efficient design tailored for intercity operations and passenger comfort.

Eicher Trucks & Buses, a division of VECV, manufactures and markets Eicher-branded trucks and buses while distributing Volvo Trucks in India. The company aims to strengthen its role in sustainable mobility by supporting operators like LeafyBus through specialized electric fleet solutions.

LeafyBus currently operates daily electric services on the Delhi-Dehradun corridor and intends to add at least one new electric travel route each month under its expansion plan. The operator recently secured USD 4.1 million in funding from Enetra India Pvt. Ltd. to scale its fleet, develop charging infrastructure, and introduce new routes.
