India's highway travel experience is on a constant stage of development with new expressways coming in place. A major challenge has been around facilitating clean restrooms around Indian roads. To deal with this issue, MoRTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highways) has come up with a new initiative. In a recent tweet, MoRTH announced the Clean Toilet Picture Challenge, urging commuters to report unhygienic toilets at toll plazas. If a user spots an unclean facility, they can upload its photograph on the Rajmargyatra app, and upon verification, receive a Rs 1,000 FASTag credit. The move aims to improve cleanliness standards on national highways while actively involving road users in monitoring public infrastructure.

Rs 1,000 FASTag Credit For Reporting Dirty Restrooms

The government has clarified that the initiative is genuine and officially supported, encouraging wider participation. By linking cleanliness reporting with FASTag incentives, MoRTH hopes to ensure better maintenance of toll plaza amenities across India. For frequent highway users, this initiative not only promotes hygiene and accountability but also rewards responsible reporting. As highway travel volumes continue to rise, such measures could play a key role in improving overall road user experience.

The move is expected to reduce waiting time at toll plazas and improve traffic flow on busy national highway stretches, where long queues remain a common issue during weekends and peak travel hours.

Also, one should keep a note that paying toll tax through UPI invites a penalty of 0.25 per cent of the original value. For reference, if the toll amount is Rs 100, defaulters will have to pay Rs 125.

Another big change is the curb on toll waivers through government identity cards on private vehicles. Going forward, toll plazas will only offer relaxations to vehicles fitted with exempted FASTags.
