If you're planning to drive during your next trip abroad, it's important to know that carrying just your Indian driving licence and visa won't be enough. International rules require travellers to hold an International Driving Permit (IDP), which acts as a globally recognized extension of your domestic licence. This document, authorized under UN conventions, confirms that you are a licenced driver in India and translates your credentials into multiple languages, making it easier for foreign authorities to verify. Accepted in over 150 countries, the IDP includes your photo, personal details, and the categories of vehicles you are permitted to drive.

What Is An IDP?

The IDP is typically valid for one year from the date of issue and must be carried alongside your Indian licence and passport. Without it, renting or legally driving a car overseas becomes difficult, and in some countries, impossible. Fortunately, the application process has been streamlined through the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' Parivahan portal, allowing you to apply online from home.

How To Apply For IDP?

To obtain an IDP, applicants must fill out Form 4A, available on the Parivahan website. Along with the form, you'll need to provide:

  • Copy of your valid Indian driving licence
  • Medical certificate in Form 1A
  • Proof of passport
  • Proof of Visa (if applicable)
  • Four recent passport-size photographs
  • Prescribed fee of Rs 1,000.

Payments can be made digitally via UPI, debit or credit card, or net banking. In certain cases, Aadhaar authentication may be required, or you may need to book an appointment at your local RTO for verification. Once the application is submitted and verified, the IDP is usually dispatched to your registered address within three to seven working days. This quick turnaround ensures you can plan your travel without unnecessary delays.
