Delhi's draft EV Policy 2.0 could change the math for hybrid car buyers in the capital. The proposal includes a 50 per cent exemption on road tax and registration fees for strong hybrid vehicles priced up to Rs 30 lakh. This incentive, however, is valid only until March 31, 2030. While nothing is final and the proposal is still under consideration, the direction is clear enough to influence your purchase decision.
How the Proposed Tax Benefit Works
Currently, Delhi imposes a 10 per cent road tax on cars priced above Rs 10 lakh, and hybrid buyers receive absolutely no relief. The draft changes this by offering a 50 per cent reduction on both road tax and registration fees for strong hybrids within the Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom) price bracket. This benefit is time-bound, expiring on March 31, 2030, unless extended by a future policy.

To put things in perspective, full electric vehicles under Rs 30 lakh are proposed to receive a complete 100 per cent exemption under the same draft, while hybrids get half that benefit. This gap is intentional; the policy is primarily designed to encourage buyers toward pure electric vehicles, with hybrids serving as a transitional option.

Money You Could Save On Top Hybrid Models
The potential savings based on the proposed 50 per cent road tax reduction are significant:
- Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Victoris: Approximately Rs 83,000 to Rs 1 lakh
- Toyota Hyryder: Around Rs 84,000 to Rs 1.01 lakh
- Toyota Innova Hycross: Up to Rs 1.45 lakh
- Maruti Suzuki Invicto: Up to Rs 1.44 lakh
- Honda City e:HEV: Up to Rs 1 lakh
All these strong hybrid models fall within the Rs 30 lakh ex-showroom limit. The upcoming Renault Duster hybrid, expected around Diwali and priced under Rs 25 lakh, should also qualify if it launches before the policy is formalised.

The policy remains in the consideration phase, and no final notification has been issued yet. For now, the smart move is to wait for the official policy before booking a hybrid in Delhi.
