Audi F1 Team has announced that Team Principal Jonathan Wheatley has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, marking a surprising leadership change in the early phase of the team's Formula 1 journey. In his absence, Mattia Binotto will take over the responsibilities of Team Principal on a permanent basis, alongside his ongoing role as Head of the Audi F1 Project.
Wheatley had joined the team less than a year ago, taking charge of the race operations as the Sauber-based outfit prepared for its full transition into Audi's works team in 2026. His appointment was seen as a crucial move, given his extensive experience at Red Bull Racing, where he served as Sporting Director and played a key role in multiple championship-winning campaigns.

At Audi, Wheatley worked closely with Binotto, who has been leading the development of the power unit as well as overseeing the transformation of the Hinwil-based facility. The team has shown encouraging form at the start of the 2026 season, even managing to score points in its opening races. These performances indicated steady improvement for a project that has undergone significant restructuring after years of underinvestment during its Sauber era. The management reshuffle, however, comes at a time when the team is trying to build consistency and momentum.

Reports have also suggested that Aston Martin F1 Team had recently shown interest in Wheatley for a potential leadership role. While there is no confirmation of a move, the development has added another layer of intrigue to his sudden departure. Any future transition could be subject to contractual obligations such as a gardening leave period.
Meanwhile, Aston Martin continues to evaluate its leadership structure, especially with Adrian Newey currently handling broader responsibilities beyond his technical role. The team has faced a challenging start to the 2026 season, particularly with performance and reliability concerns linked to its new power unit partnership.
With Binotto now fully in charge of both technical and team operations, Audi will look to maintain its upward trajectory. Backed by strong investment, including support from Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, the German manufacturer remains focused on its long-term ambition of becoming a competitive force in Formula 1 and challenging for championships by the end of the decade.
