Teenage sensation Kimi Antonelli delivered a standout performance in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix, securing his first pole position in Formula One and becoming the youngest driver ever to achieve the feat. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver edged out teammate George Russell in a dramatic session that saw mechanical issues shake up the fight at the front.
Antonelli laid the foundation for his historic result with a strong opening lap in Q3 before improving further with a blistering 1m32.064s effort. That time ultimately proved untouchable as rivals struggled to match his pace around the Shanghai circuit.
Russell had looked like the most likely challenger after a strong Sprint race victory earlier in the day. However, his qualifying session took an unexpected turn when his Mercedes encountered trouble during his Q3 out-lap. The Briton briefly stopped on track and, although he managed to continue, the car became stuck in third gear. After returning to the pits for a quick fix, Russell had only one final attempt left to challenge for pole. His last-ditch effort fell just over two-tenths short, leaving Mercedes with a front-row lockout.
Behind the silver cars, Ferrari secured the entire second row of the grid. Lewis Hamilton narrowly outpaced teammate Charles Leclerc, ensuring both scarlet machines will start just behind the Mercedes duo when the lights go out.
The McLaren pair line up on the third row, with Oscar Piastri slightly ahead of Lando Norris after a closely fought session between the teammates.

Further back, qualifying proved more challenging for Max Verstappen. The reigning champion struggled to find pace in his Red Bull and will start eighth on the grid. Alpine's Pierre Gasly managed to split the Red Bulls with an impressive performance, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the session.
There was also late drama during Q2 when Gabriel Bortoleto spun at the final corner, triggering yellow flags that disrupted several drivers' attempts to improve their times. The incident ultimately contributed to a handful of unexpected eliminations.
Despite the chaotic moments, the spotlight firmly belonged to Antonelli. In only his second season in Formula One, the young Italian not only secured his maiden pole position but also rewrote the record books-surpassing the previous youngest polesitter record set by Sebastian Vettel back in 2008.
