Qualifying at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix unfolded with incidents and surprises under the sport's new regulatory framework, which has placed greater emphasis on cost caps, sustainable fuel blends, and stricter component usage limits. These rules are designed to level competition and reduce reliability risks, but they also added pressure on teams during the session.

Max Verstappen's season began with disappointment, as a rear-wheel lock-up sent his Red Bull into the gravel and into the wall, eliminating him in Q1. He was joined by Alonso, Perez, Bottas, Sainz, and Stroll. In Q2, Mercedes managed to repair Kimi Antonelli's car after his FP3 crash, allowing him to return to the fight. Ferrari, quick in practice, found Q2 more difficult, while Hamilton recovered to sixth after a slow middle sector. Leclerc advanced with a 1m19.357s lap, while Hulkenberg, Bearman, Ocon, Gasly, Albon, and Colapinto were eliminated.

Rookie Arvid Lindblad impressed by reaching Q3 in his first Formula 1 qualifying session, while Gabriel Bortoleto gave Audi its first Q3 appearance. A red flag was triggered when Antonelli's car was released with a cooling fan still attached, shattered after Norris ran over it. The final shootout ended with George Russell on pole, Antonelli second, Hadjar third, Leclerc fourth, and Lindblad ninth on debut.
