Mexico City: A moderate 5.4-magnitude earthquake rattled central Mexico on Friday, prompting people to stream out of offices and homes in the capital, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
The epicenter was 37 kilometers (23 miles) south of Chiautla de Tapia in Puebla state and was 61 kilometers deep, according to the National Seismological Service.
The quake triggered Mexico City's alert system, causing people to flood the streets of the densely populated capital, which is sensitive to distant temblors because it was built on soft soil on top of a former lake. Thousands died in an 8.1-magnitude earthquake in 1985.
Puebla Governor Rafael Moreno Valle and Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera said there were no reports of damage. The epicenter was 185 kilometers south of the country's capital.
