In 2004, well before Manmohan Singh was chosen, the Left wanted Congress president Sonia Gandhi to be the Prime Minister of the UPA government. Confirming this in NDTV's special election series Political Roots, CPM leader Sitaram Yechury said he had met her and told her that she should take the top job. But he made it clear that 2014 is different from 2004 and even if Sonia Gandhi asks for support, policy differences make it an impossible option despite the common desire to keep the BJP out. Mr Yechury was facing young voters at his alma mater, Delhi's St Stephen's College.
