The Kelkar panel on fiscal consolidation has recommended that the government should reduce subsidies on fuel and fertiliser substantially. Noted economist Indira Rajaraman says that cutting subsidies is must in order to put the fiscal house back in order. In the medium term, Dr Rajaraman believes that measures such as land monetization can be considered to raise resources if done in a transparent manner.
