Peshawar: A government official says militants attacked a paramilitary police post in northwest Pakistan and killed six policemen.

Habibullah Khan says seven policemen were wounded in the attack before dawn on Wednesday about 25 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of the city of Peshawar. The policemen were members of the Frontier Constabulary force.

Khan says policemen retaliated in a gunbattle that lasted several hours. Several militants were killed. Khan is a local government administrator.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. But the Pakistani Taliban have carried out many similar attacks against security personnel in the area.
