In a unique initiative, prisoners at Shivaganga are kept in an open jail to cultivate farmland. At Purusadai, nearly 50 prisoners are growing vegetables in 35 acres of land. The prisoners are also given salary for this work. Prisons DIG, Palani said, "The prisoners were selected on the basis of their behaviour in jail. They grow sugarcane, coconut trees, guava trees and vegetables in an organic way. They also take care of cows, goats and chickens and through the waste they make natural fertilizer."
