It is a historic day in Sri Lanka. With the stunning defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa in the presidential polls, an election he thought he was sure to win as he took a gamble and called them two years ahead of schedule. His biggest blow came with one of his own colleagues leaving his side and becoming the common opposition candidate. As Maithripala Sirisena is sworn in as Sri Lanka's new President tonight, we ask what this change at the helm of affairs means for Sri Lanka, for its reconciliation process with the island nation's Tamil population, and for bilateral relations with India.
