Centre Urges States To Cut Fuel Taxes

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a big announcement revising fuel prices on Saturday. The news was welcomed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi who said it was people first for his government but it has been received with skepticism by some others. The centre and the states are at loggerheads over taxes and duties on petrol and diesel. while the centre feels the states are not reducing VAT in line with the centre's cut on excise duty. States have expressed concerns over their fiscal cushion, especially with the compensation regime due to end in June.
