LIVE: Coup Attempt 'Black Stain' On Turkish Democracy, Says PM

Ankara, Turkey: Turkey military has declared martial law and curfew in the country as jets are seen flying over Istanbul. President Tayyip Erdogan has denounced what he called was an attempt by a "minority in the military", and has urged people to take to the streets.

Stand Up For Democracy: Turkish President Texts People

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan sent a mass text message to Turkish mobile phones on Saturday imploring Turks to "stand up" for democracy and peace.

The message which came from "RT ERDOGAN" and was signed with his full name, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, also called on people to take to the streets against a "narrow cadre".

  • PM Yildirim declared that the situation in his country was "completely under control".
  • He said 161 people were killed in the coup attempt against the government, with 2,839 soldiers now detained on suspicion of involvement.
  • He described the putsch bid as a "black stain" on Turkish democracy.
  • He also added that 1,440 people had been wounded.
  • PM blamed the coup attempt on the supporters of US-based Turkish cleric Fethullah Gulen.
  • He said whichever country is behind Fethullah Gulen is not a friend of Turkey and in a serious war against Turkey.
  • He emphasised the death toll 161 did not include the assailants.
