BJP president Amit Shah's remark that India is full of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh was met with strong condemnation from Bangladesh. Mr Shah's comment came at a time when Assam is checking people in the state whether they were Indian citizens. The final list of the Assam National Register for Citizens' will be out in December. The names of some 40 lakh people were not on the first list. The centre has maintained that no genuine citizen will be affected by the NRC exercise. But Mr Shah's remarks are likely to raise political heat as the country prepares to vote in the general election early next year.
