Bihu is associated with agriculture and rice in particular. Bohag Bihu is a sowing festival. It also marks the beginning of a new Assamese calendar year. People buy new clothes sing and dance to the Bihu tunes. Usually, the celebrations last for about a week but this time around with the first phase of the Lok Sabha poll around the corner, bihu has been part of the electioneering as well, but candidates use the bihu celebrations to subtly build rapport with the voters. Already each party and politician has made poll songs in tune with Bihu numbers.
