Over 13 lakh women and girls went missing in India during 2019-21, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau. The number of missing women went up 10 percent from 2019 to 2021. Former Chairperson of the National Commission for Women and BJP leader Lalitha Kumaramangalam says the government's steps are not enough in this issue. She said, "we have failed our women and girls, whether it's on monitoring or to find out how many women and girls have gone missing". She added that the organs of the missing women are often traded, while some become victims of sexual abuse and begging rackets, while adding that the real figure of missing women must be higher than the NCRB's figures. On rehabilitation of rescued women, the former NCW head said "rehabilitation is a joke in India".
