In the last one-year seventeen private hospitals came under a cloud in Tamil Nadu. This was after they conducted illegal kidney transplants. Close to seventy-five tsunami survivors were lured by middlemen to part with their organs. In another scam an estimated 500 illegal kidney transplants came to light, after the arrest in Mumbai of a Chennai based nephrologist Dr Plani Ravichandran.
