Unwanted, neglected by their families since birth, girls in Satara district of Maharashtra have found a new sense of respect and identity. 222 girls - in perhaps a first-of-its-kind, unique exercise - were renamed in a public ceremony in a bid to reinforce the importance of the girl child in a state that has one of the worst sex-ratios in the country. This after living with names, so far, that in Marathi implied that they were unwanted.
