Three days after the death of Indian woman Savita Halappanavar in Ireland came to light, her story has reinforced calls for women to have the right to abortion in conservative societies in Ireland and around the world. While many are even pushing the Indian government to influence Irish law, we ask: Does any government have the mandate to influence the legal or social systems of another sovereign country? And was this about religious conservatism or medical negligence... or both?
