From the hub of imperial commerce to the capital of one of India's two Left-dominated states, Kolkata has the layers of its history and its contradictions deeply woven into its landscape and its psyche. The city, under the Left regime, became a symbol of yet another contradiction of sorts between what the Left often said at the Centre and its own policies in West Bengal.
