So, it could appear obvious that these countries have the highest population density in the world

But you will be surprised to know that is not the case

Globally, the average population density is 62 people per square km, but there are large differences across countries

Monaco is the most densely populated country with 25,000 residents per square kilometre

It is the world's second smallest country, with an area of about two square kilometres and a population of 50,000

Singapore is ranked second, with nearly 8,700 people living in a square kilometre

That's more than 200 times as dense as the United States and 2,000 times as Australia

Next in the list are Hong Kong (6,819 people per square km) and Gibraltar (3,267 per square km)

Of the big countries, Bangladesh is the most densely populated, followed by Rwanda (584), South Korea (530), Burundi (529), and the Netherlands (525)

Greenland is the least dense, with around 0.1 people per square km, followed by Mongolia, Namibia, Australia and Iceland
