The government recently warned citizens against using phone charging portals at public places such as airports, cafes, hotels, and bus stands

Through an advisory, the government highlighted the risk of falling prey to the 'USB charger scam' urging people to exercise caution

So, how does it work? The fraudsters utilise a method called juice-jacking wherein they compromise USB charging ports to launch cyber attacks

When unsuspecting users plug their devices into such compromised charging ports, cyber-criminals can siphon off data or install malware onto the connected device

This may result in theft of personal information, installation of malware or ransomware, and even device encryption with ransom demands

To protect against such threats, it is crucial for the public to take proactive measures

Citizens must opt for traditional electrical wall outlets or carry personal charging cables or power banks
