Brown hyenas are primarily nocturnal scavengers that use their excellent sense of smell to locate carrion from several km away.

While they mostly feed on remains left by other predators, they also consume a varied diet including insects, birds' eggs, etc.

They may occasionally catch small animals such as springhares, bat-eared foxes, and seal pups along the coast.

They possess incredibly strong jaws and teeth that allow them to crush bones and access nutritious marrow.

Brown hyenas are active mainly at night to avoid the extreme daytime heat, resting under cover during the day.

This extensive nightly travel and generalist diet enable them to thrive in the harsh, dry environments of Southern Africa.
