This Siberian lake, a favourite of Instagrammers, is also called ''Maldives of Novosibirsk'' because of how tropical it looks

However, the turquoise lake is not as idyllic as it looks. In reality, it stands next to a toxic dump

A nearby power plant dumps chemical residues into it, making it hazardous for tourists

The irresistible blue hue is not the color of pristine waters reflecting off the sky, but the deposits of calcium salts and metal oxides

The water has a high pH value from the coal ash that is pumped into it, and the conditions can cause allergic reactions

After the spot became popular, the Russian power company that runs the plant urged people not to go near the water

The company also warned that the bottom of that structure is so muddy it's "almost impossible" to get out

Despite several warnings, tourists continue to visit the lake, and some even choose to swim in its waters

Many have developed skin irritations such as pimples, while others experience dryness in their noses and throats
