PAN-Aadhaar Linking Delay: Centre Collects Rs 600 Crore Penalty



The Centre has collected Rs 600 crore penalty from citizens who did not link their Aadhaar with PAN


The data till January 31, 2024, was presented before the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary


The last date for linking PAN with biometric Aadhaar was June 30, 2023


The PAN cards of such individuals were made inoperative after the deadline


Also, TDS and TCS were meant to be deducted/collected at higher rate, according to the government directive


Income Tax department had said that no refunds (including pending ones) will be made against PAN cards not linked to Aadhaar


They were asked to deposit Rs 1,000 as late fee to make their PAN cards operative again


Mr Chaudhary also said that number of PAN cards not linked with Aadhaar, excluding exempted categories, is 11.48 crore


Taxpayers can check the PAN-Aadhaar link status by logging on to Income Tax e-filing portal and clicking on the URl to link to two documents


Based on your status, a pop up message will inform you if the PAN is linked to Aadhaar or not
