According to villagers, the twin phenomenon has been happening since 1949. But it wasn't until the late 1990s that the number of twin births started to increase

Kodinhi's twin mystery has baffled researchers over the years who have failed to come up with any scientific explanation for it

Doctors have said that besides genetics, it could be due to a particular element in the air or water of the village

Some believe that it is due to the local diet, which is rich in yam and other foods said to increase the chances of conceiving twins

The same phenomenon of a high number of twin births has been observed in the Nigerian town of Igbo-Ora, known as 'Twin capital of the world'
