In June 1965, Barbieri marched into the  Royal Infirmary of Dundee and committed to fasting his way to health

Initially, doctors didn't really expect the fast to last long. However, Barbieri wanted to continue the program

For one year and 17 days, he ate no food at all. He lived on only tea, coffee, soda water and vitamins while living in his home in Scotland

His body slowly began to adapt to the lack of food by burning its own fat stores for energy

He came into the hospital for frequent checkups and overnight stays, and took vitamins on various occasions throughout the fast

After 382 days of no eating, he finally called it quits in July 1966 after losing a staggering 125 kilograms

He broke his fast with a boiled egg and a slice of bread with butter. He told reporters he had forgotten the taste of food

His weight loss via starvation became a world record in 1971. While it worked for Barbieri, lengthy fasts can be incredibly dangerous
