For more than 50 years,  Amar Bharati, an Indian Sadhu has kept his right arm raised in the air and has not lowered it since

He took an oath and began raising his arm in 1973 as a way to "militate against wars and support world peace''

Before that, he worked at a bank in New Delhi and had a wife and three children

In 1970, he suddenly quit his job and left his family and friends to devote his life to Lord Shiva

In 1973, he decided to live the rest of his life with his hand raised

The first two years were incredibly difficult as he suffered from severe pain

However, the pain subsided later and he eventually lost all sensation in his arm as it began to atrophy

He can no longer bend his arm, which is stuck in a bizarre semi-vertical position and his nails have turned into claws

Bharati plans to keep his arm raised until his dying breath, and hopes that his act will eventually lead to change in the world
